Basketball legend LeBron James Donates $1M To I Promise School in Akron, OH
LeBron James just donated $1 million to build a new gym at the school he opened in his hometown.
James introduced a grant from the Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation to the I promise school in his hometown of Akron, OH.
“To my kids, this is more than a gym,” James said. “The Dick’s Sports Matter program is helping us provide even more opportunities. An opportunity to play and learn in a safe place that many don’t have access to. I can’t imagine where my friends and I would be if it weren’t for the coaches and teachers who cared about us and the opportunities we had.” –LeBron James
The Gym will purportedly be utilized for physical education classes, after-school activities and as a safe space for local kids.
The I Promise school opened in July 2018 to serve 240 scholastically endangered students in 3rd and 4th grades.
The school is a joint endeavor between LeBron James Family Foundation and Akron, OH open schools. It is reportedly expected to serve 720 students in 3rd through 8th grade by 2022.
