Coca-Cola Brings Back 1985 Recipe for ‘New Coke’ in Honor of ‘Stranger Things’
34 years after failing in the soda beverage market, Coca-Cola is reviving this failed ’80s soda in honor of ‘Stranger Things’.
Back in the day, this ’80s soda recipe called ‘New Coke’ which spectacularly failed is coming back in honor of Netflix’s fantasy, horror ‘Stranger Things’.
The show will be featuring the drink in its upcoming third season which takes place in the summer of 1985, the same summer when Coca-Cola debuted the ‘New Coke’.
Per the official Coca-Cola website, the new formula was the first time the beverage recipe had been changed in 99 years and it “spawned consumer angst the likes of which no business has ever seen”.
The product flopped and was taken off the shelves after only a few months.
Coca-Cola has produced less than 500,000 ‘New Coke’ cans and there are only 3 ways you can get your hands on this retro can:
- As a gift when you buy limited-edition bottles on Coke’s website.
- As a giveaway when you buy a ticket at the World of Coca-Cola Museum in Atlanta.
- Through ‘Stranger Things’ pop-up vending machines that will appear in select cities in the coming summer of 2019.
Coca-Cola sees this partnership with the show as an opportunity to reach a wider audience.
Stuart Kronauge told CNN Business that, “Buying a 30-second ad to drop into a certain time-frame is not as valuable as it once was”
She added, “The world is changing into streaming and non-ad platforms and subscription-based platforms,”. “So it’s important for us to make sure that we are where our consumers’ eyeballs and hearts and spirits are.”
