Game of Thrones Star Sophie Turner Talks Mental Health with Dr. Phil
The 23-year-old actress, who plays Sansa Stark on HBO’s drama series, explained her battle with depression.
She reveals her depression and social media criticism.
“People just need to know that it’s OK to talk about it “
She hopes she is helping others to cope with their mental health by being open about her situation.
During Dr. Phils’s Podcast,’Phil in the blanks’ the actress revealed she has experienced depression for about 6 years.
She says- “If people just spoke about it, if people just opened up to their friends even, or their family, it would be OK. And the other people suffer with it too, all you do is you just have to speak to someone.”
Turner was 13 when she joined ‘Game of Thrones ‘
She said while filming the drama as a teen, social media became ‘a bit of catalyst in her depression.’ with trolls commenting on her weight, blemishes and acting abilities.
In response, Dr. Phil questioned Turner’s role in the spotlight that 99% of the girls in the world would love to be like her.
She replied: ” I count myself as very lucky for that but I don’t think I viewed myself worthy of anything that I was doing.”
Approx 17.3 million people in the US have experienced Depression.
Turner admits she is in a better place with the help of therapy and treatment and hopes her transparency will help others feel less alone and reach out for help.
“The payoff for me going through all of that’s something that to make movies about it or to just speak about it and be transparent about it. that’s the payoff that I would like.” –Sophie Turner
