NASA declared Mars rover dead!
Nasa’s Mars rover known as Opportunity is no more !!
It roamed the Martian surface for almost 15 years, approximately 5,515 Earth days.
During a press conference, NASA revealed that Opportunity hadn’t responded to a last-ditch effort Tuesday to establish contact.
On June 10, 2018, the vehicle was surrounded by a dust storm leaving its solar panels of no use. Since then, over 830 rescue commands had been beamed to the rover.
Despite thousands of efforts to contact it, the rover was declared dead 8 months later.
“This is a hard day. Even though its a machine and we’re saying goodbye, it’s still very hard and very poignant but we had to do that.” -says John Callas, Mars exploration Project Manager, NASA
You will be astonished to know that the plucky Robot was technically designed to last only 90 days at the red planet however excelling the expectations Opportunity roamed 28 miles in its lifetime and lived longer than any other space rover in history.
The Discovery that Mars was once capable of sustaining life is its biggest achievement !!
During its service to NASA, it returned thousands of pictures and was successful in changing the way scientists think about Mars.
